A modern woman in a traditional world

Fatina Nassar at home

Fatina on the balcony of her house . The history of the building manifests itsel on it's walls

The sudden appearance of young Muslim women , in traditional costume ( with a burqa ), in the streets and beach of Jaffa , seemed to me like an attractive/exotic fashion statement .Dramatic contrast ,one might  say romantic , to the white washed city of Jaffa .
But to modern Muslim women , this phenomenon is like a red rag to an angry bull .
The return to
restrictive tradition requires conservative behavior , even those westernized.

For Fatina Nassar , Pilates teacher ,who's  favorite garment is her sports outfit -  flexible, exposed and tight , this phenomenon is outrageous .
But although she spends most of her time in sports clothes ,she will not go out like this in her neighborhood . Out of respect for both the environment and society ,and because of social pressure.
Fatina is a mother of four children , the oldest 27 years old , and the youngest studied with my daughter in a school in Jaffa .I came to visit her in hopes to open a window into Muslim women's lives of Jaffa.

But despite the fact that the Nassar family lives in one of the desired streets in the Adjami quarter , Fatina surprised me when she said that she'd move with  joy to the center of Tel - Aviv .Heavy social pressure and crime in the streets of Jaffa, make her move around mostly by car , and mostly outside of Jaffa . The gym where she teaches is located in Holon , and she also gives classes in her beautiful house .
The oldest son lives and works in banking in London , the daughter Sasha (who recently was awarded a prestigious international fashion design award ) studying and working in Paris , another daughter lives and works in Tel Aviv and the youngest son is in high school in northern Tel Aviv . The Nassar family owns one of the biggest and most prosperous restaurants in Jaffa , but she rarely visit the area where  the restaurant is located  because she does not feel comfortable there .Bad neighbourhood , she says .Despite her criticism  Fatina saves eclectic/Islamic cultural souvenirs. Koranic verses , congratulations for a wedding, an old handwritten Koran. It's pretty she says . Indeed it is . And when we sat drinking coffee, she pampered me and peeled the fruits for me :) to host is in my culture , she says.Even the magnificent home , built nearly twenty years ago , after living a few years,  in a small apartment of two rooms with her parents in law and three children , is built in a Arabic traditional style  - where the main room leads to  the various rooms and divisions of the house .
Classical Arab paving , marble columns imported from Italy, and a dinning table - Frank Lloyd Wright design . Everything is mixed , in a nonchalant manner .

With every encounter with Arabic people I'm surprised by our different perception of our mutual enviroment  .
My reference point is Europe , while they are very natural talking about travel to Amman and Saudi Arabia. Not Fatina . Although the best baklava she says, comes from Nablus , she travels twice a year to Europe for holidays.
Paradox pursuing a paradox , and when she shows me an ancient Koran that belongs to the family  , she asks not to be photographed too exposed . Still there are things that must be respected , undisputedly .
This is the Middle-East after all .
