Noemi Givon - Local Style - נעמי גבעון

Noemi Givon loves hats. Here in a total look from Comme if faut

The leading galleryist  Noemi Givon is on my limited list of people with exquisite personal style . I photographed Noemi in her beautiful home and asked her a few questions

My personal style signifier is comfortable clothes that return to their proportions (Issey Miyake) even while carrying art. My artistic agenda also dictates my personal style - pretty minimalistic and very few colors.

The last thing I bought and loved was within my own closet. I shop in my closet. I have so many clothes I have not yet put on or put on a very little.

And the thing I’m eyeing next is Romeo Gigli's clothes. I go back more than forward when it comes to clothes.

A recent “find” - I do not have time to examine finds

The last music I downloaded - I'm a follower of church masses and liturgy

In my fridge you’ll always find Parmesan

The last item I added to my wardrobe is leggings and Flip Plops

The one artist whose work I would collect if I could is Rothko

The best gift I’ve given recently is Kitchen towels I bought at the Delicatessen

And the best one I’ve received recently is Several bottles of Hypricum (St. John Vort) in classic homeopathic preparation from a company in Zurich

A place that inspires me - Greece, an island in Greece
Outside of business trips, I only go there

The most interesting travel destination I have been to recently - I travel with my eyes, online

The people I rely on for personal grooming and wellbeing are - nobody

My favourite websites are edu websites
Where I read articles on art and theory of art after links I receive
And magazines about art. Beyond that, news sites and social networks, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

One good thing about the Conflict

A great place for Old School Graffiti is the Old City of Jerusalem and Eastern Jerusalem. It's sad to say , but due to the bad political situation a lot of places haven't been renovated and as far as preserving the past this is actually good. Many shops and institutions have remained exactly the same for the last 60 years or more.

I prefer though to have the city divided in order to get an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians, hoping that I'll be able to come and visit peacefully.

Looking for Na'ama

WWD

I always say one can no longer "find" interesting or beautiful people to photograph in the streets. They have all been found by modeling agencies and signed. It turns out that it is not true.

 I have seen
Na'ama early in the morning on the street, not far from my home, as I was preparing my shoot for New York Magazine. I saw her, briefly, passing on a bicycle and I hurried to catch her. I explained to her what I was after and sleepy Naama agreed to be photographed. I clicked five times and we parted. The image actually was not selected by the magazine's photo editor, but I really liked it and when I put the image on social media and saw the comments, I marked to remember the face and name.Naama's name came up quite quickly, about a month later, when we started working on the photo shoot for Ginger, with designer Orit Kesten. I told Orit I have someone just right for the brand - a magical and beautiful girl. Now all we had to do is find her. I uploaded the image of Naama to Instagram and asked if anyone knew her. After day I got a phone number.
The gamble proved a perfect choice, every frame with Naama came out perfectTo end the story - shortly after I I was commissioned again by another  magazine to do a street style photo shoot. This time for the American  WWDAnd I met Naama again by coincidence on the street. We laughed a lot ,I think she must be my guardian angel. This time her photo was chosen by the editor, Bobby Quinn, for the piece on the style in Tel Aviv : They are wearing in Tel-AvivYou can see the whole article here

Rachel the poetess - Israeli icon

Being a fashion photographer here in Israel, has
led me to look for the special characteristics of the country
My latest fashion shoot was inspired by an Israeli icon
Rachel the poetess - Rachel Bluwstein, 1890-1931.

Rachel came from Russia at the beginning of the 20th century and lived a tragic life, near the sea of Galilee and in Tel -Aviv.
Her idealistic and sometimes bohemian lifestyle as a Zionist was ended at an early age, by a dramatic disease - Tuberculosis.

Ideal material for an Israeli fashion photographer .

The image of Rachel has fascinated me for a long time, and since one of my aims is to promote Israeli style I decided to do a fashion story around her .
First I had to choose between Tel -Aviv and the Sea of Galilee/Kineret
Both are beautiful and interesting visually.
Tel Aviv with it's white Bauhaus buildings on the Mediterranean and the blue Sea of Galilee with it's black basalt rock houses .

As a photographer I thought that taking the pictures on a roof in T-A would be more surprising and dramatic visually, less of a story telling this time and more of a dramatic visual statement. So I went to look for a roof.
I had actually found the room on the roof at 5 Bugrashov Street, where Rachel has spent her last days, but since it had been renovated poorly, I couldn't use it.
I took from there an old chair though, imagining that perhaps it was hers.

Since the roofs of Tel Aviv are tarred and then whitewashed which imprints wonderful abstract designs, I looked all over Tel Aviv for a suitable roof setting. I even contacted the tarring companies in order to get addresses from them.
Many of the old buildings of Tel Aviv are four storied without lifts, so I ended up walking up and then down many flights of stairs until I found the one most suitable.
Of course this happened to be one just around the corner from my studio in Jaffa. I chose it because it was spacious enough, without satellite dishes or hot water boilers, and was impressive in its sandstone bricks and its patches of years of adding tar.
Fashion here in Israel in that period was mainly influenced by the work uniforms of the mostly Russian pioneers, but since I didn’t want to simply reconstruct the period, I decided with Oren Dar the stylist just to let the feeling of the dress code shine through.

That is to let the modesty, severity and sadness show.
