Kuchinate - Asylum seekers in Israel -

A year ago, I started photographing the African community of refugees and migrant workers in South Tel Aviv in order to give a voice to people who are usually transparent to us.
I do most of the shooting in the street,

directly contacting the people,
and not through various institutions (although good ones),
in order to preserve my independence in photography and to avoid prejudices.
And also to avoid highlighting the suffering and misery of my subjects, even if it is for a good cause.

I summarize, here, in very brief, my attitude, hoping that the reader will understand exactly what I mean.

In the photographs of Collective Kuchinate ("Knitting with one knitting needle" in Tigrinya), I deviated from my rules and photographed the
Kuchinate women collaborating with the organization.

First of all to promote it!
And also because I believed I could remain in my photographic style, even though in some of the photographs I took an approach that helps sell the beautiful baskets that the women of Kuchinate knitted.
It's okay to break the rules from time to time ... especially when it's for a good cause.

Kuchinate is a small and important organization founded in 2011 by two remarkable women -

Dr. Diddy Mymin Kahn, a clinical psychologist,
 and
Sister Azezet Habtezghi Kidane (known as Sister Aziza)
, an Eritrean nun and nurse.

The two created a kind of small oasis in the South of Tel Aviv that gives women refugees (most of them survivors of the torture camps in the Sinai ! ), a supportive female environment and decent work. Time out from the hardships life.

Together with Ruth Garon, we organized a photography shooting day at the center itself, and all the women were asked to come. (Some work from home). We created a small studio with backgrounds and lighting, and they all felt festive and that there is going to be something special. Female sisterhood prevailed. Lots of laughter and hugs. The cooking began in the morning, some came with the children, and at noon we all ate together around a large table, a traditional Eritrean meal. Then I continued to photograph until the end of the day.
The small set of photos in this post is the photos that have been released for various purposes
of Kuchinate, to date, and I hope it brings them a lot of buyers.
To me , this day, has allowed access, with a sense of security and mutual trust to the African women, who are further weakened and anxious within the refugees/ asylum seekers population, which is the most weakened group in Israel.
