Klesmer Festival in Safed

A year ago, I read an interview with a French musician, Jerome Benoit ( Macondo Orquestra).
Benoit said he was coming specially to Israel to visit the amazing Klezmer Festival in Safed. "I like to play Hasidic music because it's exciting music. It's like a trance. It's a very energetic music that fills you with energy."
And I thought to myself that I am in Israel, a few meters almost) from Safed, and I've never been to this festival. So I made a reminder to visit.
While Jewish music is not exactly my cup of tea, I love Safed and love to know new music, so it sounded like a great combination. We went just for one night and it was just perfect. We came exactly on the day when the main show was Dudu Tassa and all the other concerts were good too. Also great were the makeshift food stalls, the eclectic crowd, the music, of course, the old town with it's narrow (and unfortunately neglected) streets. And above all the cool weather!

וכך אמר :"אני אוהב לנגן מוזיקה חסידית כי זה מצמרר. זה כמו טראנס. זו מוזיקה מאוד אנרגטית שממלאת אותך בכוחות". ואני חשבתי לעצמי שאני נמצאת בישראל ,מטר (כמעט) מצפת, ומעולם לא הייתי בפסטיבל הזה. רשמתי לי במוח (וגם ביומן) לבקר. י

אמנם מוזיקה חסידית היא לא בדיוק כוס התה שלי, אבל אני מאוד אוהבת את צפת וגם אוהבת להכיר מוזיקה חדשה, אז זה נשמע שילוב מעולה. נסענו רק ללילה אחד והיה פשוט מושלם. נפלנו בדיוק על היום בו המופע המרכזי היה דודו טסה וגם כל היתר מצא חן בעיני. י

The crowd in the festival was largely composed of residents of the city of Safed, which gladdened me most. A large part of the current population of Safed are very hard working poor people and I was happy that the joy of music reached them, both adults and young people. I was also pleased to see a whole world of orthodox Jews, Bnei Akiva through to the Mizrachi jews (I'm afraid I do not use the exact right terms) expressed in the most beautiful way possible. Youngsters with Kipot and long Peot, singing along with Dudu Tassa and knowing all the words of all the songs. The festival also attracts Seculars from all over the country and abroad and to my surprise this year is the 28th consecutive year it takes place. All performances were open to the public free of charge and organizational perfectly. Five stages scattered throughout the city in beautiful spots. In short - I recommend you reserve a place for next year.

הקהל בהופעות היה מורכב בחלקו הגדול מתושבי העיר צפת, עובדה ששימחה אותי במיוחד. חלק גדול מהאוכלוסיה הנוכחית בצפת הם אנשים קשיי יום ושמחתי שהשמחה הגיעה אליהם, גם למבוגרים וגם לצעירים. שמחתי גם לראות עולם שלם של יהודים שומרי מסורת, מבני עקיבא דרך ש״ס ועד לכמעט חרדים (אני חוששת שאני לא משתמשת במונחים המדוייקים) מקבל ביטוי בצורה היפה ביותר האפשרית. צעירים עם כיפות ופאות ארוכות ויפות רקדו ושרו עם דודו טסה את כל המילים של כל השירים. הפסטיבל מושך גם חילונים מכל רחבי הארץ ומחו״ל ולהפתעתי זו השנה ה- 28 שהוא מתקיים. כל המופעים פתוחים לקהל ללא תשלום והאירגון למופת. הבמות פזורות בחמישה מקומות יפים ברחבי העיר הקטנה ובקיצור - אני ממליצה לכם לשריין מקום לשנה הבאה. י
