Brutalism

Growing up I Tel Aviv I was surrounded with concrete. 

Although Tel Aviv is declared today as the White City, my childhood was in concrete. My grammar-school and then my high-school were all Brutalist buildings with bare grey concrete walls and long grey staircases , which were originally probably well planned but then changed often by janitors and headmasters, and decorated with our drawings stuck with sellotape to the concrete.
During my military service which I did in a kibbutz I was acquainted with the beautiful architecture of the communal buildings of the kibbutz - the dinning room and the culture club in most Kibbutzim were planned by outstanding Israeli architects,  and although nowadays they are usually badly kept they demonstrate a very good example of Brutalist architecture.

I did not like the buildings at the time. It was not easy to study among those grey solemn bare walls and the severe dinning room was not very welcoming, but the esthetics was deeply planted within me and I grew to appreciate it as a photographer.

So when fashion designer Tami Chomski, came up with the idea to set the session we were planning for her collection shots, on the background of this architecture, I was very excited.

To me it seems like the Israeli equivalent of Japanese minimalism.

Modest Elegance that at the moment is often disregarded.

Restrained elegance like Chomski's clothes.

We considered a few locations and eventually decided to set the shoot in Seminar Efal, not far from Tel Aviv.
Efal was an Urban Kibbutz for a short while until it was disbanded and now it serves as a seminar center.

I was delighted to find out that the main buildings of Efal were planed by the iconic architect Samuel  Bickels, who has planned many of the culture buildings and dinning rooms of different Kibbutz in Israel.

 גדלתי בתל אביב מוקפת בבטון

למרות שתל אביב הוכתרה כ 'העיר הלבנה', ילדותי היתה מוקפת בבטון. בית הספר היסודי שלי ולאחר מכן התיכון, היו כולם בבניינים ברוטליסטיים, עם קירות בטון אפורים חשופים וגרמי מדרגות אפורים ארוכים, אשר תוכננו במקור כנראה כהלכה אבל אז שונו לעתים קרובות על ידי שרתים ומנהלים, ועוטרו בציורים שלנו שהודבקו לקירות הבטון עם סלוטייפ 
בשירות הצבאי שלי, בקיבוץ, התוודעתי לארכיטקטורה היפה של המבנים הקהילתיים של הקיבוץ - חדר האוכל ומועדון התרבות ברוב הקיבוצים תוכננו על ידי מיטב האדריכלים הישראליים, ולמרות שהיום חלקם הגדול שמור במצב ירוד, הרי שהם מפגינים דוגמה טובה מאוד של סגנון התכנון האדריכלי המכונה ברוטליזם


לא אהבתי את המבנים בזמנו. זה לא היה קל ללמוד בין הקירות החשופים האפורים וגם את הקירות חמורי הסבר של חדר האוכל החמור, בקיבוץ, לא קידמתי בברכה, אבל האסתטיקה ניטעה עמוק בתוכי ולמדתי להעריך אותו כצלמת 
לכן, כאשר מעצבת האופנה תמי חומסקי, הציעה לצלם את הקולקציה שלה, על רקע של ארכיטקטורה זו, התחברתי לזה מיד 
לי זה נראה כמו המקבילה הישראלית של מינימליזם יפני
אלגנטיות מאופקת בדיוק כמו הבגדים של חומסקי 
שקלנו מספר אתרים בקיבוצים שונים, ובסופו של דבר החלטנו לצלם בסמינר אפעל, לא רחוק מתל אביב. אפעל היה קיבוץ עירוני לזמן קצר עד שפורק ועכשיו הוא משמש כמרכז סמינרים
 שמחתי לגלות שהמבנים המרכזיים של אפעל תוכננו ע״י האדריכל האיקוני שמואל ביקלס, אשר תכנן רבים מבנייני התרבות וחדרי אוכל של הקיבוצים בישראל ובראשם את משכן האמנות היפהפה בעין חרוד
